Sakkara is the embodiment of the design brief given by 6 Toronto businessmen in 1967 to Olin Stephens of Sparkman & Stephens Yacht Design. They wanted a 37 - 40' boat capable of winning races in the Great Lakes and of being a fast, safe and comfortable ocean voyager. S&S was the top international naval architecture and design firm and their breakthrough 12 metre design Intrepid had just won America's Cup.
The Hughes brothers in Toronto had recently commissioned a 37' boat from S&S and Olin Stephens showed their preliminary design to the 6 from Toronto. After some modifications they were all happy and S&S called the Hughes brothers and asked if they wanted to build 6 boats to the new design. Of course they did and the Hughes 38 came into being.
Sakkara is one of the 6 boats built as prototypes, wherein each owner had the boat finished to their personal spec for interior layout details, steering system and rig size and type. Sakkara has the tall masthead rig and wheel steering without the optional trim tab.
Her second owners did two Trans-Atlantic voyages, then returned to Toronto. Another Toronto Hughes 38 cruised to Australia, and two other Toronto Hughes 38s, including another prototype, were the only two boats in a flotilla heading to the Maritimes to complete the leg around the Gaspe Peninsula in a Gulf of St Lawrence gale with sustained 50+ knot winds and spreader height breaking waves. It is fair to say that the Hughes 38 has lived up to the aspirations of the 6 and the naval architecture supremacy of S&S in the era.
Sakkara is for sale by the 5th owner, the 3rd owner in the same Toronto yacht club. The third owner re-powered Sakkara in 1988, installing a Yanmar diesel engine and painting her green on green deck/hull tan on white. The fourth and current owners focused on interior comfort features, electrical systems and deck and rig upgrades.
Here are a few features by the current owner:
2015 - new dodger with lexan windows and Sunbrella window covers
2015 - new bimini & connector with top window cover
2015 - new helm cover
2016 - new furling genoa
2017 - new electric toilet
2018 - decks re-finished
2020 - new prop
2020 - engine overhaul
The next owner can choose how they want to make their mark and personalize her. Still a very solid benchmark as a rugged, great looking, safe and comfortable cruiser with good performance.
Sakkara can be viewed at Ashbridge's Bay YC.
